Zozobra, also known as Old Man Gloom:
Zozobra is a giant marionette effigy constructed of wood, wire, and cotton cloth. Each year, it is built and burned on the Friday of Labor Day weekend prior to the annual Fiestas de Santa Fe in Santa Fe, New Mexico, United States. Standing at an impressive 50 feet 6 inches high, Zozobra has become a unique and beloved tradition in the city.
The name “Zozobra” roughly translates to “anxiety” or “anguish” in Spanish. The effigy represents collective gloom and negative emotions. As the crowd gathers, they bring with them bits of their own “gloom” – scrawled regrets, divorce papers, eviction notices, and even never-used wedding dresses. These symbolic items are tucked within Zozobra’s androgynous frame.
Before the🔥burning ceremony, Zozobra moans and twists, its demon-red eyes darting around. A procession of white “glooms,” child dancers resembling diminutive ghosts, is chased away by the Fire Dancer. Finally, as Zozobra’s moans reach a fever pitch, the keeper of the flame ignites the effigy’s long, flowing skirt. The flames quickly consume Zozobra, along with all the castoff gloom from the past year. Amid fireworks, what’s left of him falls to the ground, leaving the crowd with a sense of catharsis and release.
For 99 years, Santa Fe residents have gathered to witness this spectacle. They come for the sublime satisfaction of watching their sorrows go up in smoke, honoring a uniquely Santa Fean ritual in the “City Different”.
