The Kubotan is a 5-to-6-inch, cylindrical self-defense keychain weapon invented in the late 1960s/1970s by Grand Master Takayuki Kubota for the LAPD. Designed for non-lethal, close-quarters compliance and pressure point control, it was based on traditional Japanese yawara sticks. It became popular with civilians for its discreet, effective design in urban environments.
Inventor & Origin: Developed by Takayuki Kubota (founder of Gosoku-ryu karate) in the 1960s while working as a self-defense instructor for the Tokyo Police.
- Police Adoption: Introduced to the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) in the early 1970s to help officers, particularly women, control suspects without causing permanent injury.

Kubotan is a registered trademark of Takayuki Kubota, who originally developed it as a tool for police officers to restrain suspects without permanent injury.
